Blue-throated Hillstar

Oreotrochilus cyanolaemus

Critically Endangered

The Blue-throated Hillstar is a nectar-feeding hummingbird of the Andean highlands of western South America. It also takes tiny insects and spiders for protein, using fast hovering flight, rapid wingbeats, and a long bill to work flowers and defend feeding areas. It is at very high risk, so remaining habitat and known sites are especially important.
