A small, dark, skulking bird, it scurries mouse-like through dense undergrowth and bamboo with its tail often cocked, staying hidden as it searches near the ground for insects. Classified as Endangered, it is threatened mainly by the clearing and fragmentation of its forest habitat. Fun fact: The name tapaculo refers to the habit of cocking the tail, and these birds are notoriously hard to glimpse in their tangled habitat.
