Great Antpitta

Grallaria excelsa

Near Threatened

The Great Antpitta is an antpitta of humid forests in Venezuela and Colombia. A plump, almost tailless bird with long legs, it hops across the shaded forest floor and low understorey, pausing upright to search the leaf litter for insects, worms, and other small prey. Classified as Near Threatened, it is threatened mainly by the clearing and fragmentation of its forest habitat. Fun fact: Despite their name and shape, antpittas are not closely related to the true pittas of the Old World.
