Jocotoco Antpitta

Grallaria ridgelyi

Endangered

The Jocotoco Antpitta is an antpitta of humid forests in Ecuador. A plump, almost tailless bird with long legs, it hops across the shaded forest floor and low understorey, pausing upright to search the leaf litter for insects, worms, and other small prey. Classified as Endangered, it is threatened mainly by the clearing and fragmentation of its forest habitat. Fun fact: Despite their name and shape, antpittas are not closely related to the true pittas of the Old World.
