Junin Tapaculo

Scytalopus gettyae

Near Threatened

The Junin Tapaculo is a tapaculo of dense undergrowth in Peru. A small, dark, skulking bird, it scurries mouse-like through dense undergrowth and bamboo with its tail often cocked, staying hidden as it searches near the ground for insects. Classified as Near Threatened, it is threatened mainly by the clearing and fragmentation of its forest habitat. Fun fact: Many tapaculos are told apart mainly by voice, as different species can look almost identical in the gloom of the undergrowth.
