New Caledonian Owlet-nightjar

Aegotheles savesi

Critically Endangered

The New Caledonian Owlet-nightjar is a mysterious, possibly extinct nocturnal bird known from New Caledonia. It was historically associated with humid forest and Melaleuca savanna, and only a few records exist, making its voice and ecology poorly known. If it survives, the population is extremely small, which is why it is treated as Critically Endangered.
