Rifleman

Acanthisitta chloris

Least Concern

The Rifleman, or titipounamu, is New Zealand's smallest bird, a tiny almost tail-less songbird of native forests on both the North and South Islands and several offshore islands. It creeps over trunks and branches gleaning insects and spiders, frequently flicking its wings, and pairs hold a small territory together year-round. Fun fact: At around 6 grams it is one of just two surviving members of New Zealand's ancient endemic wren family, the Acanthisittidae.
