Sapayoa

Sapayoa aenigma

Least Concern

The Sapayoa is a plain olive bird of humid lowland forest from eastern Panama through Colombia's Choco to northwest Ecuador. Long an evolutionary puzzle, it looks like a small flycatcher but is actually the only New World member of an Old World lineage related to the broadbills and asities. Fun fact: Its closest relatives live in Africa, Asia, and Madagascar, making it a lone survivor of an ancient group in the Americas.
