Urrao Antpitta

Grallaria urraoensis

Critically Endangered

The Urrao Antpitta is an antpitta of humid forests in Colombia. A plump, almost tailless bird with long legs, it hops across the shaded forest floor and low understorey, pausing upright to search the leaf litter for insects, worms, and other small prey. Classified as Critically Endangered, it is threatened mainly by the clearing and fragmentation of its forest habitat. Fun fact: Despite their name and shape, antpittas are not closely related to the true pittas of the Old World.
